1 Henry VI: captivate

By Scott Granneman / 14 January 2007 / language & literature, word of the day / language, literature, shakespeare

From William Shakespeare’s Henry VI, part 1 (II: 3):

COUNTESS OF AUVERGNE:

But now the substance shall endure the like,
And I will chain these legs and arms of thine,
That hast by tyranny these many years
Wasted our country, slain our citizens
And sent our sons and husbands captivate.

captivate: past participle of captured, made prisoner
